Proposal to confer voting rights to NRI’s under consideration

30.07.2010 (UNI) Conferring voting rights on overseas Indians is under active consideration of the Centre, according to Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Mr V Ravi.

He informed this to Rajya Sabha member from Goa Mr Shantaram Naik. The voting rights would be conferred on those who had not acquired citizenship of any other country but living abroad for various reasons, including employment and education.

Under the proposal, such citizens could register their names in the electoral rolls in the constituency of the place shown in their passport, and vote when they are present at the time of polls. UNI
